Working with the Scenario Sketch Painter Tool

The Painter Tool applies a style’s predetermined set of attribute values for a layer to any existing feature or features that you touch with the “paint brush” cursor.

To use the Painter Tool:

1. Start editing.

2. Set the Target editing layer to be the one to which you want to apply a style

3. Click the Painter Tool button on the Scenario Sketch Tools toolbar.  The Scenario Sketch Palette window will open automatically if it was not already open.

4. Click on the name of the style you wish to apply. A highlight box will appear around the style you have chosen.  If there is only one style in the selected layer, that style will be chosen automatically.

5. Optionally, you may temporarily suspend dynamic updates associated with your edits by using the Suspend Dynamic Update button.

6. Use the paintbrush to select the desired features by

a. Dragging the paintbrush over the desired features while holding down the left mouse button, -OR-

b. Sketching a polygon covering the desired features.  Any feature the polygon even partly overlaps will be selected.  To sketch a polygon with the paintbrush:

i. Hold down the Ctrl key

ii. Click points outlining the polygon

iii. Double-click to close and complete the polygon

7. Features you have chosen will be highlighted with a red dot (for point feature), red line (for line features), or red diagonal lines (for polygon features).  When you release the left mouse button or double-click, the painting “stroke” is completed and the analysis updates unless you have suspended updates.  You can paint as many strokes as desired.

8. If you suspended updates earlier, you may Resume Updates .

If you make a mistake while dragging the paintbrush, you can escape from the current paint stroke by clicking the Esc key on your keyboard while the left mouse button is still depressed.

If you are not satisfied with one or more of your most recent paint strokes, you can undo them one at a time by clicking on the

ArcMap Edit menu at the top of your screen and choosing the Undo Painter Tool.  Typing Ctrl+Z has the same effect.  Each Undo cancels one paint stroke. After you have applied the Undo command, you can Redo from the same menu or by typing Ctrl+Y.

To commit your changes, choose Scenario 360 Stop Edit or choose Stop Editing from the ArcMap Editor menu and answer Yes when asked whether you want to save your changes. To discard any changes made since you started editing or saved edits, answer No.  Ending the edit session will also end the Painter Tool session.

To end your Painter Tool session without ending your Edit session, click on another editing tool.
