Working with chart elements

Chart elements provide an easy way to include Scenario 360 charts in ArcMap layouts and maps.  Like the Scenario 360 Chart View, charts in chart elements update dynamically.

Using chart elements is a two-step process:

  1. Create an element (or elements) on the map where you want a chart (or charts) to appear.

  2. Specify which chart will appear in the element.

Creating a frame on the map

You can create chart elements in either ArcMap’s Data or Layout view.

  1. Click the Chart Element toolbar button on the Scenario 360 toolbar.  Your cursor will change to a +.

  2. Drag a rectangle on the map by clicking in the upper left corner of where you want the chart to appear, holding down the mouse button, and dragging the cursor to the lower opposite corner of your desired chart frame.   Release the mouse button to complete the element.  You can draw as many chart elements as desired by repeating this process.

Chart elements that are roughly square generally work best.  They can be resized by dragging on the sides or corners.  They can be moved around the map by clicking and dragging.  Chart elements remain a constant size with respect to the map, and they do not readjust if you zoom in or out on the map.

Specifying which chart appears in a chart element

Create your chart and make any edits you wish prior to inserting a chart element.  The chart element options do not provide a way to create or edit charts.  Specify the chart you want to appear in a chart element by doing the following:

  1. Right-click inside the chart element and choose Select Chart.

  2. Use the Chart tab to select the existing chart you want to display.  Only one chart is allowed per chart element.  (To add a new chart as a chart element, first create the chart and then add it using the chart element instructions.)

  3. To change chart options, use the check boxes and selection buttons on the Chart tab.  Note that changes made in this window will also affect chart options for the corresponding chart in the Chart View. (To edit a chart in a chart element, you must edit it in Scenario 360.)

Deleting chart elements

To delete a chart element, right-click on it and select Delete.  This will not delete the regular chart.  If you delete a regular chart, it will disappear from its chart element, but the chart element will not be deleted.
